Will my roof look unsightly?
| We recommend solar PV and solar thermal panels integrated with a Nu-lok slate or ceramic tile roof. The solar panels are used in place of tiles, so your roofline will not change. Roof mounted panels – fixed over other types of roof – are slightly more obvious, but modern designs are very easy on the eye. |

Do I need planning permission for a solar installation?
| In England, installations do not need planning permission if they comply with the General Permitted Development Order, amended in 2008. The Welsh Assembly introduced easier planning rules from September 2009. The Scottish and Northern Ireland governments are working on similar changes. If in doubt, consult your local authority. |

What happens if I don’t use all my solar PV electricity?
| Solar PV works during the day when most people are at work, but you can sell any power surplus to your needs into the grid through your electricity supplier – or top up batteries to provide ‘free’ power when you get home. Either way, you are turning your roof into a valuable tool for reducing ongoing energy costs. |

How ‘green’ are the components of a Nu-sustainable solar system?
| Almost everything that goes into a Nu-sustainable system is UK manufactured, so that the carbon footprint is as small as possible. Like us, our suppliers are committed to improving environmental performance – and when the components are assembled to form systems, they continue to reduce the carbon load indefinitely. |

What use is natural energy in a UK winter?
| Even if the sun shines only briefly, modern solar energy systems will still make some contribution to electricity or hot water supplies. Both air and ground source heat pumps are extremely efficient – even in sub-zero temperatures – and even though they consume electricity, they are very economical. |

I want to ‘go solar’ – can I get financial help?
| The Low Carbon Buildings Programme, part of the Department for Trade and Industry, provides grants for householders installing renewable energy solutions. From 31 March 2010 these apply only to heat generating technologies, as Feed-in Tariffs will be the incentive for electrical generation. LCBP grants are not automatic, but the application process and criteria are not complicated. Some local authorities also offer grants. |
| |
Can I increase capacity at a later date?
| If you have ‘unused’ south facing roof space and your Nu-sustainable system is integrated in a Nu-lok roof, it’s quick and easy to replace some more tiles with solar panels. After testing and commissioning, your expanded system is ready for action. On other roof types it may take slightly longer, but it’s equally feasible. |
| |
Can a solar thermal system freeze or leak?
| It’s unlikely you will have any problems if you use a reputable contractor. Water in the primary solar heating circuit usually has enough anti-freeze to prevent freezing, and any risk of pipes bursting. And all pipes should be pressure tested and checked after jointing. Have you system checked at least once a year to be extra sure. |
